Laboratory
In addition to the conventional tests for process control and monitoring, the
treatment plant laboratory is equipped with an atomic adsorption unit which allows the
treatment plant staff to monitor the wastewater for many toxic metals and pollutants.
The
wastewater treatment plant laboratory is approved by the New York State Department of
Health Environmental Laboratory Approval Program (ELAP) to perform analysis on non-potable
water. In addition to being certified for the analysis of conventional
analytes such as solids, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD)
and nutrients. The lab is also certified to analyze
nine metals by both Flame and Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption (AA) techniques. Samples
of wastewater and biosolids collected within the plant are analyzed for compliance with SPDES
limits as well as for process control. Samples collected from industrial
dischargers within the collection system are analyzed in accordance with federal, state, and local pretreatment standards.
The laboratory also performs analysis of industrial Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total
Suspended Solids (TSS), and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) to determine industrial sewer
billing.
